Louis D'Alessandro was raised in North Salem, NY. He began his career at eleven years old with an after-school job on a neighboring farm. He eventually went out on his own, at first growing only corn, and then expanding to multiple varieties of produce. JD Farms is the culmination of Lou's love for farming.

Cover Crops

Planting a diverse cover crop after the main crop replenishes vital trace minerals.  Picture below is a field that has been drilled with a cover crop after the corn was harvested.

Seed Selection

Seed selection means planting new varieties of fruits and vegetables available every year through universities and seed companies. The fun part is selecting the produce that is superior in taste and texture, and bringing it to market. Currently, we can boast a melon and corn that is the envy of local farmers.

Animal Nutrients

Animal interaction with the land contributes to bio-diversity. Cow manure provides nutrients and beneficial bacteria to increase soil fertility.

Composting

We make and spread compost utilizing natural processes to enrich the fields.
